
Suchitra Iyer is an Indian classical vocalist in the Hindustani tradition. She has been passionate about music from a young age, starting her journey with the south Indian Carnatic genre. Her years of rigorous Carnatic training helped make a smooth transition to the Hindustani khayal genre under the guidance of Vidushi Srivani Jade in Seattle.
Suchitra has performed in the greater Seattle area for organizations such as Northwest Folklife Festival, Ragamala Seattle, Indian Performing Arts Project, Pratidhwani, Indian American Community Services as well as the Karnatic Hindustani Music Circle of New England. She is a recipient of the Heritage Arts Apprenticeship Program grant from Humanities Washington. In this year-long project she studied the tradition of Abhangs with Vidushi Srivani Jade. Her work has been supported by the Sammamish arts Commission, Jack Straw Cultural Center and 4Culture.
In her new album 'Sunaad', Suchitra has curated songs composed by Indian American composers in the Pacific Northwest. It showcases different aspects of North Indian music, from lyrical to percussive to devotional.
Suchitra is is deeply committed to preserving Indian classical music and passing it on to the next generation. She serves on the board of Ragamala, the premier classical music presenting organization in the Pacific Northwest. She teaches Hindustani music to students of all age groups at her home studio. She also conducts workshops at schools as part of enrichment music programs.
